Review:
I had this horror book that I read religiously as a child and it had a "Splatter" section, and this and Warhol's Frankenstein were both listed. Since I had made it my mission to see each and every splatter film listed, of course I had to see this but it even jumped higher in the cue because I'm a fan of Warhol as well. What exactly this film or most of his films actually have to do with him is beyond me as far as I can see this is primarily a Morrissey show piece. At any rate, this doesn't disappoint, it's an odd twist on the Dracula tale, and it's a sleazy one! The thing is that everything is wrapped up nicely, it's very campy but what else could you expect from this sort of thing? Anyhow, our story begins with Dracula (the perfectly cast Kier) and his sister who are both on death's door because they need the blood of a virgin. Since they are in Romania, Dracula's assistant heard that there are many virginal women in Italy, so they pack up the coffin and make the trip. Whilst staying at an inn Dracula's assistant hears about a family with four virginal daughters, and they agree to take him in (for the money of course). What they didn't count on is a sexy farm hand (Dallesandro) who happens to be bedding two of the daughters (sometimes at the same time none the less). He starts probing into Dracula's quest for a virgin and discovers that the only way to save their youngest daughter (who is fourteen) is to have sex with her. Seriously...that's the solution, bang the underage girl. Anyhow there is a fair amount of sexy activity, and when Dracula finds non-virginal blood he has quite a blood barfing problem. The end sequence is also cheesy and gore filled and not to be missed. It's not the fastest paced film, but Euro-sleaze rarely is, still it delivers just about anything one could expect and it does so in an amusing manner.
