Review:
When teaming Lovecraft with Stuart Gordon, then mixing in the star of "Re-Animator" Jeffrey Combs and you know you are dealing with a winner. This is creative, fun to watch, the effects are really something and it effectively blends horror with sci-fi in a way everyone should appreciate. The story is about two doctors who are working on an experiment to stimulate the pineal gland which should expand the mind I think. Anyhow things work too well when they open another dimension and some sort of lifeform attacks the lead doctor (Pretorius) and rips him apart. Now we are left with Dr. Tillinghast who has been thrown into a mental institution and accused of murdering his fellow Dr. Pretorius. He gets bailed out by a Doctor who wants to see what sort of experiment so Tillinghast is released to her custody (along with a cop). They then try to recreate the experiment only things get carried away when the new doctor involved gets a little too involved with Dr. Pretorius (who is now the leader of this other dimension). Have I confused you enough? Well the bottom line is that there is tons of action, the character playing the cop is pretty darned entertaining and the effects and story make this a must see. The lifeforms are sort of like teethy eels (minus Pretorius of course) and they do attack, this isn't the goriest film ever or anything but they do at least try. This isn't as good as "Re-Animator" but it'll certainly appeal to fans of that sort of shenanigans!
