Review:
Well I've heard nothing but amazing things about this film and liking most of Polanski's work I thought this would be a shoo win. Firstly if you are a horror film and not a "cinema" film this will likely bore you to tears. Nothing much happens for most of the film, still the cinematography is lovely and Deneuve's acting is rather captivating. This is definitely a story driven film, and it does pay off and I would recommend it more for those who like "good" movies rather than high octane exciting stuff. Catherine Deneuve plays an aloof man-hater with some obvious issues. See basically we are watching her very slowly going insane which is artistic and fascinating in it's own way. Things aren't exactly explained, and much of it is guess work, but the surrealist style to the picture somehow makes this okay. As the character starts to go more insane the horror bit kicks in, but it's hardly bloody nor is there like a mass killing spree or anything. This is more atmosphere and well psychological than anything but it's very effective and well shot. I think it's worthwhile if you again do appreciate and are patient with slow moving stuff, but I don't think it's as amazing as others say. Still worth a view or two if you are a fan of Polanski or just looking for something a little bit creative and different.
